Finished the Order of Battle pages

I've finished the Chickamauga Order of Battle pages for both the 19th and 20th. Next will be completing the individual unit pages, but that will be some time. First I'm going to get the maps for the 20th completed and uploaded, as well as the rest of the pictures and videos.

Confederate Order of Battle

For the past two weeks or so I've been working on the Chickamauga Confederate Order of Battle for September 19th. Its been a lot of math and excel spreadsheets. Trying to tell whether the commander means effective strength, effective strength plus officers, or total present for duty is tough. Its really all in the context. I hope to have it up in a week or so. Then I might start and finish the order of battle for the 20th for both armies. That should be easier, since the basic format is there from the pages of the 19th.

Finishing the 19th

I've decided to go ahead and finish the maps and pictures for the 19th. Get the whole day done. I'm almost finished with the maps themselves. Then I'll put them up on the site. After that I'll work on the pictures for the Then and Now section. That may be easier to just do that whole section, since there is no point in dividing the pictures between the two days of battle.

After all that is done I'll probably finish and put up the Confederate order of battle for the 19th.

Brigade Overviews

I decided to add some larger images of the whole battlefield showing the positions of the brigades. I think it really shows how the battle flowed. This will be especially useful on the maps of September 19th. Just creating them I have a better feel of how the battle actually unfolded.

Maps up

I've finished uploading the maps of the early fight near Jay's Mill. I've also completed the main Chickamauga page, as well as the Campaign, Sept. 18th, and Sept 19th pages. You can now navigate to the maps normally.

Next, I will get the Then and Now sections started, and get pictures and video of the Jay's Mill area on the site. Afterwards I may work on the Order of Battle pages again.

1st Division, 14th Corps

So, this week I finished the regimental pages for Baird's 1st Division, 14th Corps. Looks like it will take about a week per division. I also wrote and put up the Methodology page so people can see the work behind the numbers.

I'm kinda sick of spreadsheets and html. I think I'll work on maps this week. I think I'll finish and put up the maps for the beginning of the battle near Jay's Mill, up until Cheatham's Division enters the fight around 12:30.

Pickett's Mill

I'm working hard on the Chickamauga Order of Battle. I almost have the Union Army in a format where I can start importing Excel sheets and start making web pages. Last weekend I took a break from the computer and went out to the Pickett's Mill park for a day of ranger tours and picture taking. It was a great trip! Hours of walking through the park, and a ranger led tour that led us off the trails and walking through the woods. Usually a big no-no! Many thanks to the interpretive ranger, James Wooten, for the tour and letting me ask questions and talk his ear off later!

I've put up two pictures on the main Pickett's Mill page of the view Hazen's men had looking up at Granbury's position at the top of the ravine, and a reverse one from Granbury's position.

Back to crunching numbers!

Order of battle

I've decided to work on Chickamauga next. It will be the big centerpiece of the site. I'm putting up the Order of Battle pages first, since many people can use the information in their research, and also for wargaming.

Last weekend I put up the casualty pages for the Union and Confederate armies. This week I finished organizational charts and explanations for the confusing structure of the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

Next week I'll work on the Union campaign pages.

Allatoona finished!

I'm finished with the Allatoona Pass section!

Now I have to decide to work on Pickett's Mill, to get more content, or Chickamauga, to get the big battle on the site and more visitors.

Union Order of Battle

Finished the Union order of battle this week. Took a little longer as I worked on a regimental template page. Now that I have everything the way I want it the Confederate pages will be easier.

After that I'm going to make a quick map of all the modern changes to the battlefield, including the forest cover, and add some satellite photos. I should be done after that. Then I'll move on to Pickett's Mill.

Photos are finished

I finished resizing and organizing the photos. I created all the photo pages, and have uploaded them. The photo and video sections are done.

I also worked on and finished the bibliography page for Allatoona Pass.

Now all I have to do is finish up the Order of Battle page. I'll get to the Wargaming Allatoona Pass section at a later date.

Almost done!

Photos

Today I created the main pages for the modern photos. I made the maps showing the camera positions, and broke them down into sections. The sections are now up live. Next week I will begin resizing the photos, and making the pages for them.

Once that is over the Allatoona Pass site is almost done. I'll just have to upload the Order of Battle and create the Bibliography. The Order of Battle may take a bit of work, since each regiment will have its own page, but once I get the template down its should be easy. I just have to get permission from various websites to use pictures of battle flags and commanding officers if they are not in the public domain.

Got a lot done

I got a lot done this morning. I finished the historical pages with the descriptions and maps, and I uploaded them. Up next I'll be resizing photographs.

Working on Allatoona Pass

Got a lot done today and this past week. I have the basic structure down for the Allatoona Pass site. I have much of the flavor done, such as the text for the main page and opening moves of the troops. Now I'm in the nitty gritty of writing the text for each map, and resizing the finished maps to fit each page. Optimistically, I think I can be done with Allatoona Pass by the end of April.

Time to go resize some maps.

Getting Started

I started in earnest today getting the website up. I finished the basic main page design and template, as well as the main button links and pages. Next up, finishing up the way the blog works and the cafepress store.
